I have this client. Let’s call her Jane.
Jane loves platinum hair. She doesn’t want to see a drop of yellow anywhere.
Sometimes Jane sits in my chair and spills her guts about how she hates her job, her boyfriend is probably cheating on her, her son is getting in trouble at school, her eating is out of control, she wishes she had more time for exercise, she isn’t sleeping because her neighbors are ass holes…. I think we all know a Jane.
On those days – her hair comes up to the lightest light blonde – No problem. She skips out of the salon with a new lease on life. All her problems seem to be easy to handle now that her hair is on point.
SO…. about 8 weeks later, Jane is in my chair at her next appointment. She looks great. After her last appointment, Jane went straight to the store, bought some healthy food and a shit-ton of vitamins. She has been working out and getting great sleep. Her relationships have improved, her son is well behaved, and she got a promotion.
Fantastic!!! Right??
Well… yes. In addition to her life game getting stronger – so has her hair. All the healthy food, exercise and vitamins Jane has been dutifully enjoying have also improved her hair’s ability to withstand the elements.
That’s what you want, right? Stronger, healthier hair….. until it’s time to put it in the ring with hair’s greatest foe – Bleach. Jane’s hair is strong enough now to put up quite a fight. Plus, all the vitamins she has been taking have left deposits in the hair. (Think of it in the same way that hair is used for drug screening because drugs, vitamins and meds leave trace deposits in the hair bulb beneath the scalp that grow right into the hair changing it’s chemical make up.) All this makes the hair bleaching outcome very unpredictable.
So, now what?? Since I know Jane and I know her hair and Jane knows how I love to know everything – she told me that she has been taking vitamins and improving her health —- and now I know that lifting Jane’s hair is going to be more difficult (but, not impossible).
If you’re a “Jane”, please know – the strength and weakness of your hair’s health affects how your regular color formula reacts to your hair. If you are not getting the same results every time, this could be a reason to consider.
Cheers!! – Leslie xoxo
