What’s a base-bump?

“Base-bump”…” Breaking the base”…. “Base adjustment”  Every stylist and salon uses their own terminology.  The Base-Bump is, by far, the most confusing item on my service menu.

First, let me explain what a Base-Bump  is not —->

A “base-bump” is not a full color service. It is not intended to lift the natural regrowth more than 1 to 1 1/2 levels and it can not lift synthetic dye. “Base-bumps” do not cover grey hair and is not the same service as a “Scalp-color”.

So…. What IS it???
A “Base-bump” (or “Breaking the Base” – as some stylists refer to it) is a process of slightly lightening the new growth’s natural color a shade or 2. The service is done in 5 to 10 minutes after cleansing at the shampoo bowl. The lightening mixture is applied very quickly and rinsed without ever leaving the shampoo chair. This service is used to blend or soften the transition between the base color and the highlighted hair.

The “Base-bump” service can be booked either with a highlight appointment, or on it’s own to blend the regrowth and extend the time between highlight appointments. Ideally, this service is done to clients with a natural level 7 or lighter.  if the natural color of the hair is any darker, you risk exposing too many red or orange undertones. It is not ideal for grey or salt and pepper hair.
